The holiday season can usually trigger anxiety and depression. This year in particular has many of us struggling with things we didn’t have to before like limitations on travel, which can keep us isolated and away from our loved ones, financial concerns and of course, a very real pandemic.

Seasonal depression is a very real phenomenon and more common than we might think. Symptoms can include loss of interest in your usual activities, fatigue, trouble concentrating and irritability.
So, whether it’s the distance from loved ones, overscheduling or a deeper emotional concern, here are a few simple ways to pivot your energy and work through the holiday blues:
  1. Limit your alcohol intake. Too much of a good time can impact your mood and amplify any negative thoughts you may have
  2. Be open to new traditions. In times of change, we tend to become nostalgic for the past. Creating new memories can increase your sense of control and empowerment
  3. Write letters. To family and friends. Maybe even one to yourself that you open next year! See what you were thinking and feeling and how things have improved
  4. Take care of the details. Use your alone time to declutter and organize. You may feel accomplished and maybe even pleased with yourself!
  5. Use technology. Especially to connect with family and friends. Plan game nights, cook together via zoom or plan a scavenger hunt.
  6. Volunteer. Doing something for someone else is a natural mood lifter!
  7. Get outdoors. Mother Nature has a way of soothing us when we let her. Take a walk or a hike and use your 5 senses to be Present with yourself
  8. People watch. Even if you can’t be with actual friends and family, get outside and observe others in the daily routines. Not only is it a distraction, but it may also inspire curiosity and creativity!
  9. Reach out to others that are alone. If you feel comfortable enough, connect and gather with others who are alone as well, just remember to socially distance and wear a mask!

The holiday blues are real. And 2020 has made them even more real. If some of these simple lifestyle changes do not help, please consider talking to a professional. Being proactive about how you are feeling and the losses you are experiencing are the key steps to managing the blues effectively.
